The German Hunting Terrier is a very intelligent breed of dog with a great determination to work. They are a friendly, energetic breed, although when at rest they are calm and appear noble.

For many, this small breed is the ultimate hunter; its courage and pluck have helped to make the breed successful in the working environment.
The German Hunting Terrier has a flat skull which is broad between the ears and narrows between the eyes. The muzzle is strong and pronounced with a black nose. The small oval eyes display a resolute expression. The ears are set high and v-shaped, carried in a semi drop ear fashion. The neck is strong and not too long. The body has a straight topline with a strong and straight back. The tail is well set and carried horizontally or in a slight sabre-formed fashion. In some countries the tail is docked. The forelegs have long forearms which are dry and well-muscled and carried well under the body. The hind legs are straight and parallel with a long and broad upper thigh that is well-muscled.

The German Hunting Terrier is a friendly dog only to its owners but an aggressive dog in the hunt. Their tireless nature is a great asset in the hunt which is what they were designed for. They do not do well as house pets when left alone as they can become restless if not allowed to do what they love doing; hunting and flushing. They require firm training to ensure their vigilant guard instinct in kept under control.

The Beginnings of the German Hunting Terrier

The German Hunting Terrier was developed after the First World War as German game managers tried to breed out all the foreign species that were in Germany. The aim was to re-establish the ancient native German breeds that had died out or been crossed with other breeds. Before and during the First World War, a Fox Terrier had won Crufts for seven out of 10 years and it was decided that the Germans should have a dog to compete against the Fox Terrier in the field.

German breeders set about trying to breed their own terrier which could outperform the Fox Terrier in the hunt. Three experienced German hunters and breeders set about creating this dog. They selected a Black and Tan hunting dog to base the breed on, due to its excellence at hunting underground. A zoo director presented these three breeders with four of the terriers which were said to have come from pure bred Fox Terriers. It was these four pure bred Fox Terriers that became the foundation of the German Hunting Terrier breed today.

Breed History

The Development of the German Hunting Terrier

Developing the German Hunting Terrier was not an easy task and soon the three breeders got the help of Dr Herbert Lackner. To create this breed, they had to use breeds that were not native to Germany to cross with their Black and Tan hunting dog. After many crossings with the Old English Wirehaired Terrier and the Welsh Terrier they eventually created a stable and fixed appearance. This was the birth of the German Hunting Terrier.

The German Hunting Terrier had a trainable temperament and a water-loving, natural hunting instinct. These characteristics made the German Hunting Terrier very popular with hunters as its character made it very easy to handle and its love of hunting apparently insatiable. The German Hunting Terrier Club was founded in 1926 and the dog became a huge hit across Germany with its numbers rising quickly.

The German Hunting Terrier Today

The German Hunting Terrier reached the United States shores in the 1950s but the dog never reached the popularity it had in its native country. This was due to the fact that Americans had no need for a dog that was adept at hunting fox underground. They also had their own excellent small hunter in the form of the many pit bull crosses.

The German Hunting Terrier has continued to prove its worth as a hunter and is still used by many hunters today.
